Artist’s Reflection
This photograph was taken in 2004 and captures the majestic grandeur of the Qilian Mountains. The black-and-white tones enhance the contrast of light and shadow, highlighting the layers of terrain—from the deep ravines to the distant snow peaks—revealing the vastness and solemn beauty of the land.
In the late autumn of 2004, I set foot on this highland and decided to document this land, carved by wind and rain, through black-and-white film. Standing on the ridge, I waited for the dance of light and shadow. When I pressed the shutter, it felt as though I could hear the echoes of this land that once witnessed the Silk Road and ancient battles.
Background Story
In 121 BCE, General Huo Qubing led the Han army deep into the Qilian Mountains during summer, launching the famed "Battle of Qilian Mountains."
At the time, the Xiongnu were frequently harassing the northwestern borders of the Han Empire. Determined to weaken their power, Huo Qubing led his troops through the perilous mountain terrain during the sweltering summer. Utilizing agile tactics and his deep understanding of the mountainous landscape, he decisively defeated the Xiongnu cavalry, securing the Han Dynasty’s northwestern frontier and ensuring the smooth passage of the Silk Road.
The Qilian Mountains bore witness to this historic battle and forever hold the legendary heroism of Huo Qubing. Today, standing before these mountains, one can still seem to hear the echoes of that heroic era.
