About LuminNoir

LuminNoir means “A Faint Light In the Darkness.”

“Lumin” represents light—hope, insight, and the pursuit of truth.
“Noir” evokes darkness—the weight of history, the depth of time, and the richness of shadow in imagery.

The name pays tribute to the art of light and shadow, and perfectly echoes the creative vision of Mr. Yang, a retired photographer from Xinhua News Agency. Throughout his career, he has documented pivotal moments in China’s history—such as the 1998 Yangtze River floods and the construction of the Beijing–Kowloon Railway—and directed documentaries and films for CCTV, using his lens to explore the light and darkness within humanity.

His work is rooted in black-and-white documentary photography—filled with tension, authenticity, and a cinematic touch. Each frame captures a fleeting glimmer at the intersection of history and reality—each is a luminous moment carved from darkness.

LuminNoir is more than a gallery of photographs. It is a museum of visual memory, a window through which the stories of China are told—one image at a time.
