Artist’s Reflection
This black-and-white photograph, taken in 2006, captures a majestic moment in the vast expanse of Mingsha Mountain, Gansu. The dunes rise and fall like waves, their curves soft yet powerful under the shifting play of light and shadow. The absence of color draws attention to the intricate textures of sand and the layered depth of tonal contrast.
I chose a low-angle composition to juxtapose the dunes against the sky, lending the scene a sense of solemn grandeur. In the distance, a faint caravan of camels appears—silent, unhurried—adding a breath of life to this quiet desertscape. These still dunes seem to be listening, even now, for the echoes of hooves from centuries past.
Background Story
Mingsha Mountain is famed not only for its stunning landscape and the natural phenomenon of “singing sand,” but also for the legends that live in its winds. One such tale tells of Fan Lihua, a legendary female general from the Tang dynasty who camped and trained her troops here during a westward campaign. When night fell, soldiers and horses left countless footprints in the sand. As the wind passed over, the marks lingered—as if even the desert itself refused to forget her valor.
Locals say the sound of the sands is the echo of war drums and galloping steeds. Today, though the battlefield has long since quieted, the dunes remain—silent witnesses to a storied past, whispering to the sky the memory of an age when wind, sand, and steel once clashed.
