Artist’s Reflection

Taken in 2006, this black-and-white film photograph captures the desolation of He Cang Cheng, a once-strategic site deep in the Gansu desert. The sculptural forms of eroded rocks seem like ancient relics shaped not by human hands, but by time and wind. The texture and tonal depth of film emphasize the contrast between light and shadow, enhancing the vastness of the desert and the stoic strength of stone.

In composing this image, I sought to echo the dialogue between rocks and dunes—a natural harmony forged over centuries. Through this photo, I hoped to evoke the historical gravity of this forgotten site and invite viewers to feel the silent weight of time embedded in this barren land.

Background Story

He Cang Cheng, located 20 kilometers from the ancient Yumen Pass in Gansu Province, was once a vital military supply depot for Chinese armies. As a key stronghold along the Silk Road, it safeguarded critical routes into the Western Regions and supported the Han Dynasty’s frontier presence.

Over the centuries, He Cang Cheng gradually fell into disuse, leaving behind only wind-worn stones and the fading marks of time. The scene captured in this photograph reflects the intersection of desert and history—a solemn remnant of what was once a lifeline of prosperity and defense, now surrendered to silence and sand.
